Exploring the OLJ Type 2 Lens Hood on the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH

At Old Lens Junkies, we enjoy exploring new possibilities for our original lens hood designs, particularly when they can complement other legendary photographic lenses.

The OLJ Type 2 was originally developed for the remarkable Nikkor-N 5cm F1.1.

However, we were curious to see how its distinctive brass construction and classic appearance would complement another extraordinary lens — the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH.

An Interesting Experiment

Using an E60-to-62mm step-up ring, we mounted the OLJ Type 2 lens hood onto the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH.

Our primary objective was to evaluate the overall appearance and proportions rather than to test optical performance.

The Noctilux has a longer lens barrel than the Nikkor-N 5cm F1.1. Based on our measurements, their respective lengths are approximately 88mm and 68mm — a difference of 20mm.

Because of this difference, we believe a slightly shorter lens hood might provide a more visually balanced appearance on the Noctilux.

A Different Look When Reversed

One particularly interesting discovery was how attractive the OLJ Type 2 appeared when mounted in its reversed position.

The reversible construction offers a distinctive appearance while demonstrating the versatility of our original design.

The OLJ Type 2 reversible lens hood design is protected by Japanese Patent No. 7650527, granted in 2025.

Looking Toward Future Possibilities

Although the OLJ Type 2 was specifically designed for the Nikkor-N 5cm F1.1, this experiment illustrates how an original accessory might inspire new applications for other classic lenses.

Perhaps a shorter, dedicated OLJ lens hood for the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH could become an interesting future project.

For now, this remains an exploration of design, proportion, and the enduring appeal of exceptional photographic equipment.
