The OLJ Type 1 was our first lens hood project.

The design was inspired by the distinctive hood of the legendary Nikkor 5cm F1.1 and was created to give these classic Nikon rangefinder lenses a strong, period-appropriate appearance while remaining practical for everyday use.

​

The Type 1 is made from solid brass and finished in traditional black paint.

​

It also fits selected classic Leica lenses with a compatible 48mm fitting, including the first-generation Elmarit-M 28mm F2.8.

The OLJ Type 2 was developed specifically for one of Nikon’s most extraordinary rangefinder lenses.

Intended for:

• Nikkor-N / Nikkor-N.C 5cm F1.1

• 62mm filter thread

Original Nikkor 5cm F1.1 hoods have become extremely rare and valuable, making many owners reluctant to use them.

​

Our solution was a substantial solid-brass reversible hood that could be used every day while the original hood remained safely stored.

​

The reversible design was filed in Japan as Japanese Patent Application No. 2023-109302 and subsequently granted as:

The hood can also accommodate a 67mm filter inside the hood.

The OLJ Type 3 was originally developed specifically for the W-Nikkor 3.5cm F1.8 LTM, using its 43mm filter thread.

Originally intended for:

The Type 3 is made from solid brass and uses a 43mm screw-in fitting. Its outer design also allows a 52mm filter to be fitted to the hood.

Because many classic Nikon rangefinder lenses use the same 43mm filter thread, Type 3 can also be fitted to:

• W-Nikkor 2.1cm F4 — S-Mount

• W-Nikkor 2.8cm F3.5 — S-Mount

• W-Nikkor 3.5cm F1.8 — S-Mount

It turned out to fit a whole family.

The OLJ Type 5 was developed for a group of compact classic Nikon lenses using the unusual 34.5mm filter thread.

Because several other classic Nikon lenses also use the same 34.5mm thread, Type 5 can also be fitted to selected compatible lenses, including:

• Nikkor-Q.C 5cm F3.5

The Type 5 is designed to accept a 37mm filter inside the hood and a 60mm filter on the outer rim.

Like the other original OLJ hoods, it is made from solid brass and intended for regular use with valuable vintage lenses.

A very small hood for a very special family of Nikon lenses.

The idea behind OLJ LUX began with a simple problem:

I could not find the filter I needed.

​

Several of our ZUNOW 5cm F1.1 lenses use the extremely uncommon 54.5mm × 0.75mm filter thread.

​

Old filters can still occasionally be found, but relying on seventy-year-old filters is hardly a permanent solution.

​

So we decided to make our own.

​

We make the unusual sizes because the lenses we love still deserve to be used.

The ZUNOW 5cm F1.1 is one of the most fascinating Japanese ultra-fast lenses of the 1950s, yet its production history remains surprisingly poorly documented.

​

This ongoing OLJ research project studies:

• Leica Thread Mount versions

• Early “Ping-Pong” lenses

• Later flat-base lenses

• Silver and black versions

• Serial-number sequences

• Teikoku Kogaku and Zunow markings

The purpose is not simply to collect serial numbers.

We want to understand how the ZUNOW 5cm F1.1 evolved during its short and complicated production life.

Each newly discovered lens adds another piece to the story.

The OLJ Type Z is a new lens hood project developed specifically for the ZUNOW 5cm F1.1.

The idea follows the same philosophy behind our patented Type 2 hood: allow the owner to protect and use an exceptionally valuable vintage lens without depending on an extremely rare original hood.

Unlike our heavier brass Nikon hoods, Type Z is planned in aluminum with a direct screw-in fitting.

​

The design is intended to be simple, practical and visually sympathetic to the original ZUNOW.

​

The challenge is not merely to make a hood that fits.

​

It has to look as though it belongs on the lens.

​

Production will be deliberately limited.

​"The Eyemo Project began with a ZUNOW cine lens made for the legendary Bell & Howell Eyemo 35mm motion-picture camera.

Initially intended for:

• ZUNOW F1.1 Eyemo-mount cine lens

The objective is to develop a Bell & Howell Eyemo-to-Leica M adapter that allows historically important Eyemo-mount cine lenses to be used on modern Leica cameras.

​

The principles are simple:

​

• No permanent modification to the original lens

• No unnecessary complexity

• Preserve the original cine-lens character

• Make the adapter practical enough for real photography

​

The Eyemo mounting interface is being studied from an original Bell & Howell turret, allowing the prototype to be based on the real historical mount rather than assumptions from drawings alone.

​

Although the ZUNOW F1.1 is the starting point, the long-term goal is to make the adapter usable with other interesting Eyemo-mount cine lenses as well.

Project D explores how vintage D-Mount 8mm cine lenses can be used on modern full-frame cameras.

​

Initially intended for:

​

• ZUNOW 38mm F1.1 D-Mount cine lens

D-Mount lenses were designed for the very small image area of 8mm motion-picture film. Simply adapting the mount is therefore not enough — the original image circle is far too small for a full-frame sensor.

​

Project D explores an optical solution:

​

D-Mount lens → optical image expander → controlled spacing → Leica M

​

The first experiments use an approximately 2× optical expander, with the ZUNOW 38mm F1.1 as the reference lens.

​

The objective is to enlarge the usable image circle while preserving as much as possible of the original lens character.

​

If successful, the same concept may later be tested with other historic D-Mount cine lenses.

​

Project D is also being studied from an intellectual-property and patent perspective, because the combination of optical expansion, controlled spacing and modern camera adaptation may go beyond a conventional mechanical adapter.

The Concept

​

Project No. 10 began with a simple objective: to provide additional protection for valuable vintage Nikon lenses fitted with our OLJ Type 5 lens hood.

​

The Type 5 hood was originally developed for compact classic Nikon rangefinder lenses with 34.5mm filter threads, including the W-Nikkor.C 2.5cm F4 LTM and W-Nikkor 3.5cm F2.5 LTM.

​

Rather than attaching a protective filter directly to the original lens, our approach is to utilize the 60mm outer filter thread of the Type 5 hood.

​

The result is the proposed OLJ LUX Protective E60 Filter with an Integrated 62mm Step-Up Thread.

​

One Filter, Multiple Applications

​

Although originally conceived for the OLJ Type 5 hood, the design offers several additional possibilities.

​

1. Protection for OLJ Type 5 Users

​

The filter attaches to the 60mm outer rim of the Type 5 hood, providing a protective optical barrier in front of the valuable vintage lens.

​

2. Compatibility with Leica E60 Lenses

​

As an added benefit, the filter can also be used with Leica lenses featuring an E60 filter thread, offering high-quality optical protection while providing a 62mm front thread.

​

3. Compatibility with OLJ Type 2 Lens Hood

​

The integrated 62mm front thread also creates the opportunity to mount our OLJ Type 2 lens hood on compatible Leica E60 lenses.

​

This offers an interesting crossover between two OLJ products originally developed for different classic lenses.

Project No. 11 introduces a range of OLJ-branded adapter rings for mounting classic L39 Leica Thread Mount (LTM) lenses on Leica M cameras.

From vintage Nikkor and Canon lenses to ZUNOW and other LTM classics, these simple adapters help bring generations of lenses into everyday use.

​

Three frameline versions

• 28/90 — selects the 28mm and 90mm frameline pair.

• 35/135 — selects the 35mm and 135mm frameline pair.

• 50/75 — selects the 50mm and 75mm frameline pair.

The framelines displayed depend on the Leica M camera model. Choose the version appropriate to your lens’s focal length.

​

The rings feature brass construction with a silver-coloured plated finish and OLJ JAPAN engraving. The engraving reveals the warm gold tone of the brass beneath, giving each ring a subtle contrast without added colour.

Protecting Classic Nikon Rangefinder Lenses

Original rear lens caps for classic Nikon S-mount rangefinder lenses have become increasingly difficult to find.

​

At Old Lens Junkies, we believe that valuable vintage lenses deserve proper protection, not only at the front but also at the rear.

​

Our latest project focuses on developing a precision-machined rear lens cap for the Nikon S external bayonet mount.

Starting with the Nikkor 5cm F1.1

​

Our initial development will focus on the external-bayonet version of the legendary Nikkor-N 5cm F1.1.

​

Using an original Nikon S external-bayonet rear cap from our collection as a physical reference, we intend to develop a modern replacement that offers secure attachment, appropriate internal clearance, and protection during storage and transportation.

​

The design will emphasize mechanical precision, durability, and respect for the original lens construction.

​

Two Different Nikon S Mounts

​

The Nikon S rangefinder system uses both external and internal bayonet mounting arrangements.

​

These require different rear-cap designs.

​

Phase 1 — External Bayonet: Our first priority, beginning with the Nikkor 5cm F1.1 external-mount version.

Phase 2 — Internal Bayonet: A separate rear cap may be developed for compatible Nikon S internal-bayonet lenses, subject to mechanical and optical clearance testing.

Materials, final dimensions, finish, compatibility, pricing, and production quantities will be determined after prototype evaluation.

Project No. 12 is currently in the design and prototype-planning stage.
